El Olam Eternal

El Olam

The Eternal God

Genesis 21:33

And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there

he called on the name of the LORD, (El Olam) the Everlasting God. NASB

God is Eternal– The Lord is not bound by the limits of time. God lives in eternity, where he has access to the past, present or future. The Lord is literally the beginning and the end, the First and the Last, He is in the Scripture called the Everlasting and Eternal God.

Deuteronomy 33:27 – 27 “The eternal God is a dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms; NAS

Isaiah 40:28 – “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.” NAS

Psalm 93:2 – 2 Thy throne is established from of old; Thou art from everlasting. NAS

Job 36:26 – 26 “Behold, God is exalted, and we do not know Him; The number of His years is unsearchable. NAS

God being Eternal is “before all things.” (Col 1:17) He has always existed. He has neither beginning of days nor end of life. (Heb 7:3) He always was, is now and always will be. Because of this truth, God stands alone like no other being in the universe, “Who is like unto Thee Oh Lord?” (Ex 15:11). He transcends the limits of time. The Scripture affirms that “heaven and earth will pass away”, but God will remain forever.

Psalm 102:12,25-28 – 2 But Thou, O LORD, dost abide forever; And Thy name to all generations. 25 “Of old Thou didst found the earth; And the heavens are the work of Thy hands. 26 “Even they will perish, but Thou dost endure; And all of them will wear out like a garment; Like clothing Thou wilt change them, and they will be changed. 27 “But Thou art the same, And Thy years will not come to an end. 28 “The children of Thy servants will continue, And their descendants will be established before Thee.” NAS

Because God is eternal, He also possesses knowledge of events in history past, present and future. He is omniscient. He sees all events of past, present and future as an ever continuing present circumstance. It is easy for people to believe that God knows all the events of the past and present, but many find it hard to believe that He knows all the events of the future, for to us in time and space they have not yet happened. But friends, if God does not know the future, He is not God! Heed the Divine Testimony;

Psalm 139:16 – 16 Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Thy book they were all written, The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them. NAS

God not only knows the events of the future, but ordains them. The have received His divine approval. This is called the “Decree of God.” Events of the future happen at the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God. God knew and foretold the crucifixion of His Son many hundreds of years before He became incarnate, for He was the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”(1 Pet 1:20), therefore we read of His “being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God.”(Acts 2:23)

Acts 15:18 – 18 “Known to God from eternity are all His works. NKJV

We have only to open our eyes to see the marvelous works of the eternally powerful and  lovely God. His dominion and gracious character are resounded from all of the awesome works of His hands which surround us on all sides.

Romans 1:20 – 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. NAS

The question of evil in the world is one with both a profound and incomprehensible answer. Indeed God alone knows and understands His eternal purposes. But in this is a very simple answer to the question of evil. The Eternal God has from eternity, allowed and even ordained all of the events of history for means of accomplishing His eternal purposes.

Ephesians 1:11 – 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, NASB

The fact that God is Eternal, alone speaks of His power and dominion. If He was before all things, and created all things, then He is obviously greater than all things, including time itself. He alone is the owner and proprietor of everything in existence. As the Scripture declares, He is the “the only Sovereign, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.”

1 Timothy 6:15-16 – He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords; 16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen. NAS

He therefore possesses “Eternal Dominion.” His power is forever. He will never be dethroned, but He alone establishes authority according to His purposes. He alone is the immortal, self-existent all powerful God.

From this friends, we can have tremendous security. If we live in the reality of His eternal power, we have a refuge and a shelter from all of life’s disappointments and trials and snares. We have someone to turn to who is greater than all of our troubles and cares, who provides everything we need in abundance, who will uphold us even in “the valley of the shadow of death.” Yeah “Thou art with me!”

Psalm 46:1God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.

Deuteronomy 33:27 – 7 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.NAS

Won’t you rest in Him today?

Draw near unto God, and He will draw near unto you!
